Miguel Rio Branco

Although Miguel Rio Branco, who in spite of having lived in Rio de Janeiro since the 1970s regards himself as a citizen of the world, has gained international fame as a photographer, he has never fully identified with the medium. He is more interested in the independent construction and montage of image content than in a documentary view of reality: “I want to transform reality into a poetic statement.”

Branco’s color-saturated cosmos of alchemical images has been significantly shaped by his experience as a filmmaker and painter. In Entre os olhos, o deserto (Between the Eyes, the Desert) from 1997, he assembled hundreds of images, for the most part originating from around San Diego and Tijuana, the border regions between the United States and Mexico, into an opulent projection in which three series of ever-changing images appear side by side. This resulted in a visually dazzling sequence of images, drenched in a musical sensibility akin to jazz improvisation. Precisely because the impressively choreographed collage of images is open to numerous different interpretations, it has the power to captivate the public. Indeed, the power of the dark and sometimes mysterious images goes hand in hand with a bewitching sensuality.

Entre os olhos, o deserto is an endless film loop of great existential density about love and death, beauty and decay, the cyclical and metamorphoses. Nothing is concluded and unequivocal; everything is in a state of flux, open for transformation.
