Certain Encounters presented the work of twenty-one contemporary artists from Latin America.
The selection touched on three main areas from post-World War II Latin America: geometric abstraction, which reached its peak in the 1960s; conceptual, language-based work as it emerged in the 1970s; and more recent representational and figurative work addressing current socio-political realities. Works representing these three aspects of Latin America's artistic legacy are increasingly establishing a presence as examples of avant-garde, progressive post-war art.
Although these are three distinct periods of Latin American art, Certain Encounters allowed disparate sensibilities and generations to intermingle and new relationships and meanings to percolate among them through associations arising from both aesthetics and content. This exhibition set out to be experiential rather than didactic, proposing a series of encounters.
